Have you ever stopped to think about how the size and shape of your shield determine the way you fight?

Many fighters spend a lot of time wondering which shield is “the best.” They follow trends, observe top competitors, and often imitate what others are using in the arena. But the real question is much more personal:

Have you defined your own fighting style?
What are your strengths? What are your weaknesses? What do you actually want to achieve in a fight?

Choosing the right shield is not about copying others it’s about understanding yourself.

Small Shields – Bucklers

Bucklers are most often chosen by fighters whose primary objective is to close the distance quickly.

This style focuses on:

Entering grappling range

Taking the opponent down

Controlling or disabling the opponent’s weapon arm

Moving behind the opponent

High-intensity, dynamic, cardio-heavy fighting

However, fighting at full weapon range with a buckler can be challenging. It requires excellent awareness, precise defense, and often rapid changes in distance or angles of attack. Mistakes at long range can be costly.

Medium Shields – “Coffin”, Oval, Round

This category offers the most versatility.

Medium-sized shields allow you to:

Mix different fighting styles

Operate effectively in mid-range

Strike with the shield without fully closing distance

Defend more comfortably against incoming blows

They provide a balance between offense and defense. However, in clinch situations, depending on their exact shape, they may sometimes limit mobility or positioning.

Long Shields

Large shields are ideal for fighters who prefer to control the fight from a longer distance and avoid clinches.

This style emphasizes:

Maintaining distance

Consistent weapon work without major positional changes

Disrupting the opponent’s rhythm

Strong defensive coverage

Because both weapon and shield can be used effectively without drastically changing range, this setup offers stability and control. On the other hand, clinch fighting may become more difficult depending on the shield’s length and width.

So… What About You?

Before choosing your shield, take a step back and think:

Do you prefer fast, aggressive entries and grappling?

Do you like a balanced, adaptable approach?

Or do you want to dominate from distance and control the pace?

There is no universally “best” shield only the one that best supports your way of fighting.

What is your style, and which shield truly works for you?

Armored combat sports are far more than just strength training. They also involve stretching, mobility work, and training through full ranges of motion—elements that are essential for training effectively and, most importantly, sustainably over the long term.

At a time when our sport is no longer limited to fencing or passive clinching, but also draws from wrestling, ground fighting, kickboxing, and Muay Thai, we must adopt a more comprehensive approach to training. Added to this is the specific nature of the load of our armor—on average 20–25% of body weight—which in itself places significant demands on the body.

Why is a comprehensive approach essential?

Properly planned, balanced training makes it possible to:

avoid overuse injuries (torn ligaments, muscle strains, spinal pain),

stay in the sport for longer,

become a more complete athlete, capable of executing a planned fight strategy.

Our sport is developing dynamically—and with it, our understanding of the complexity of the physical preparation process should also grow, adapting to the real needs of athletes.

Every athlete is different

Each competitor is an individual:

with their own experience,

possible postural issues,

mobility limitations,

past injuries or movement restrictions.

A general and monothematic approach—focused mainly on “the magic of numbers” and strength training alone—can produce quick results. Unfortunately, these are often followed by a decline in well-being, reduced physical capacity, and an increased risk of injury.

A team, not just a barbell

The support we should rely on goes far beyond strength-focused personal training. It also includes:

physiotherapists, who identify areas requiring work and help restore full function after injuries (because treatment is often only the beginning of recovery),

mobility coaches, who focus on movement quality,

nutritionists, who support recovery and performance.

If we want armored combat sports to continue developing at a higher level, we too must look at them in a more comprehensive way. Conscious, balanced training is an investment not only in results—but above all in health and long-term longevity in the sport.

Beyond Steel: The Rise of Soft Training Equipment in Medieval Combat

The clang of steel, yes we love it! Yet, behind the rigorous training process, and increasingly, that process is incorporating a crucial element: soft training equipment.

While full-plate armor is the iconic symbol of our sport, its use in training presents significant challenges. The weight, stiffness, and inherent danger of sparring in full armor limit training intensity and increase the risk of injury. This is where soft training equipment steps in, offering a revolutionary approach to preparation.

**The Advantages of Soft Training Equipment**

Soft training gear offers a multitude of benefits, transforming the training experience and ultimately enhancing the skills of medieval combat practitioners:

-> Reduced Joint Impact: The cushioned nature of soft equipment significantly reduces the stress placed on joints during repetitive movements and impacts. This is especially important for preventing long-term injuries like arthritis and cartilage damage.

-> Enhanced Safety: Soft training equipment drastically reduces the risk of serious injuries during sparring. Bruises and minor aches are possible, but the likelihood of fractures, concussions, or other severe traumas is significantly minimized.

-> Realistic Movement Limitations: Soft armor mimics the restrictions of movement imposed by actual armor, allowing trainees to develop proper techniques and strategies without the added risk and discomfort of full plate.

-> Improved Technique Development: The reduced weight and impact of soft equipment allow for focused attention on technique refinement. Trainees can concentrate on proper form and execution without the physical limitations imposed by heavy armor, resulting in a more precise and effective fighting style.

-> Increased Training Volume and Intensity: The lighter weight of soft equipment allows for longer and more intense training sessions. This translates to faster learning, improved stamina, and greater overall skill development.

-> Faster Reaction Time: The reduced weight and increased maneuverability of soft equipment allow for faster reactions and quicker adaptation to changing combat scenarios.

Soft Helmet: Protection and Enhanced Vision

The soft helmet is a critical component of the training regime. Its benefits include:

-> Head Protection: Offers comprehensive head protection, mitigating the risk of head injuries during sparring and training exercises.

-> Improved Vision: Unlike some heavier helmets, soft helmets often provide better peripheral vision, crucial for maintaining situational awareness and reacting effectively during combat.

-> Neck and Head Protection: Provides protection for the back of the head and throat, areas often vulnerable in medieval combat.

-> Reduced Impact During Throws and Shield Punches: The cushioning effect of the soft helmet reduces the impact on the neck and head during throws or strikes involving shields, reducing the risk of injury.

Soft Armor for Arms, Legs, and Torso: Full Protection, Minimal Impact

Soft armor for the arms, legs, and torso provides full-body protection while minimizing the impact on joints. This allows for safe and effective training, even during high-intensity sparring sessions.

Soft training equipment is revolutionizing the practice of medieval combat. By reducing the risk of injury, enhancing technique, and enabling more intense training, it is helping to create a safer and more effective training environment for practitioners of all levels. The benefits are clear: soft training equipment is not merely a supplement, but an essential tool for those serious about mastering the art of medieval combat.

Try our soft sets! with SoftWarrior Sparta we make not only comfortable and safe equipment but in fun and individual patterns!

Today we will delve into a topic that is often overlooked in discussions about armored MMA – kicks.

Many people believe that kicks are useless in armor, and the only thing you can do is swing a sword. Nothing could be further from the truth! A well-executed kick can be very effective and change the course of the fight.

What types of kicks can we use in combat?

Front kick: a classic, simple kick that can be used to push the opponent away or block their attack.
Side kick: effective in defending against attacks from the side and disrupting the opponent’s balance.
Back kick: perfect for a surprise attack or defense against an attack from behind.
High kick: requires great strength and mobility, but can disorient the opponent and open them up for a counterattack and ofcourse knees.

The key to effective kicks is hip mobility. The greater the range of motion, the greater the force and precision of the kick.

Remember to choose the right armor! Too stiff armor can restrict mobility and make it difficult to perform kicks.

In subsequent posts:

Gloves in Combat: Friend or Foe? A Detailed Guide to Choosing

In the world of buhurt, profight, and duels, gloves are an integral part of our equipment. They protect our hands from injuries, but are they always a friend? The key to success is choosing the right gloves that provide protection but don’t limit our potential.

Buhurt, Longsword, Polearm:

In group combat, where safety is paramount, full gloves with a closed thumb are recommended. The thumb should be covered for at least 1/3 of its length, and the wrist cuff should be extended. Despite limiting movement, they provide maximum protection against hits from polearms and one-handed weapons, minimizing the risk of injury.

Materials:

The optimal material thickness is around 1.5 mm. This thickness allows for the dissipation of impact force and hand protection, while preventing the gloves from being quickly destroyed by overload.

Additional Aspects:

Size Selection: Quilted gloves should be perfectly fitted to the size of the hand.

Inner Material: The inner part of the glove should prevent the weapon from slipping and provide a secure grip.

Wrist Circumference: Gloves should have an appropriate wrist circumference to prevent them from being easily pulled off the hand during grappling.

Straps: Additional straps connecting the gloves to the forearm will ensure that they are not lost during combat.

Single-Handed Sword Duels:

In duels, where technique and precision are key, gloves can be lighter, made of 1 mm material. Fingers should be fully covered, and the thumb partially covered from the inside. (For those who want to use on own risk finger gloves should use rondels for protection)

Glove Type and Profile:

The type of glove and profile should be adapted to individual techniques. If you prioritize wrist mobility, choose gloves with a short, wide, or movable cuff. The glove itself should have a light profile, allowing for a full grip on the weapon and free movement on the handle.

Inner Padding:

The choice of inner padding and additional cushioning depends on how much minimalism we want to go for, in order to limit the weight of the glove and its limitations. We recommend familiarizing yourself with EVA foam, which perfectly distributes impact force, does not rot, and is easy to mold. You can also choose quilted or leather gloves according to your preferences.

Profight:

In this discipline, combining elements of buhurt, duels, and MMA, the choice of gloves depends on individual strategy. If you plan to use weapons in more complex sequences, choose gloves that provide greater precision. If you are focusing on single, powerful strikes, minimalism may be a better solution.

Remember:

Always match gloves to your needs and preferences.

Don’t forget about individual modification and understanding how gloves work.

Learn their strengths and weaknesses to make the most of them.

Well-chosen gloves are not only a safety feature, but also a key to success in combat. Remember, gloves can be your best friend, as long as you choose the right ones!

The balance point is the point on a bladed weapon where the mass of the weapon is evenly distributed on both sides. It is a key element in balancing the weapon and affects speed, accuracy and control during combat.

Why is the balance point important?

Speed: A well-balanced weapon moves easier and faster, which translates into effective attacks and blocks.

Accuracy: The balance point affects stability when performing movements, which increases accuracy and control over the weapon.

Control: A well-balanced weapon is easier to control, allowing for precise movements and quick responses to enemy attacks.

How to find the balance point?

The easiest way is to place the weapon on your index finger. The balance point is the place where the weapon remains balanced.

Remember:

The balance point may vary depending on the type of weapon and its construction. Training and experience allow for a better understanding and use of the balance point in combat.

In the world of martial arts, striking power is crucial. While muscle strength plays an important role, body rotation is often overlooked, yet it is an extremely important element in generating powerful strikes.

**How does it work?**

Imagine swinging an axe. Instead of just lifting and lowering your arm, we use the full force of our body. The rotation of the hips, torso, and shoulders converts kinetic energy into a powerful strike.

**Benefits of rotation:**

Increased strength: Body rotation allows you to use the strength of your entire body, not just your arm muscles.

Greater speed: Rotation gives the weapon more speed, which translates into a stronger strike.

Improved balance: The rotational movement stabilizes the body, which improves balance and control over the weapon.

Increased range: Rotation allows you to increase the range of attack, which gives you an advantage in combat..

**In summary:**

Body rotation is key to increasing the striking power of a bladed weapon. By using the energy of the whole body, we can generate powerful strikes, increasing both the speed and power of the attack and balance.

**Remember:**

Proper rotation techniques require training and practice.

It is important to control the movement and not lose balance during rotation.

Body rotation is used in many martial arts. It is a universal technique that can be applied to different types of bladed weapons.

Most common question for everyone who want to get involve in our sport is how to start?

⚔️🛡️ Start your adventure ⚔️🛡️

Here are a few steps to help you get started:

Find a local club or group: Look for clubs in your area that offer armored combat training. This is the main step to avoid several mistakes made on the beginning of the journey like: buy armor which wont fit you or your role in the sport, start fighting in armor with lack of skill which can end with a injury. The team will as well show you the inside of our sport and tell more about categories and federations like Buhurt International, IMCF or AMMA!
Sign up for training: AT training, you will learn the basics of fencing and combat techniques.

Get the right equipment: You don’t need to invest in expensive equipment at first. Clubs often provide equipment for training and members will show you several variations from which you will be able to choose best one for you!

Be patient and persistent: Learning combat takes time and practice.

Have fun and meet people: This is a great opportunity to meet new friends who share your interests.

Participate in competitions: When you feel more confident, you can try your hand at competitions or start with supporting your team!

Remember, the most important thing is to enjoy what you do and never be scared to ask questions!

And you, what fascinates you most about medieval combat?

The Cullender helmet is a most popular choice among BI and IMCF enthusiasts for last season. Why?

Have you ever wondered how the limited field of vision in helmets affects the reaction during the fight?

The Cullender Bascinet, due to its construction, limits the field of vision only to about 120 degrees. Compared to 180 degrees in normal conditions, this means that the fighter will be more aware of his surroundings and react faster to the opponent’s movements.

How does this affect the fight?

Reaction speed: The fighter must be very fast in analyzing the opponent’s movement and making decisions.

Field: Battlefield visibility allows you to better analyze potential situations that may arise and impact the course of the battle.

Strategy: More you see, more you can plan.

Is the Cullender the best helmet connecting safety and vision from time of wolfrib?

What do you think? Do you too notice that the Cullender Bascinet affects the reaction in the fight?
Who would look on this topic this way? Mostly we talk about helmet model, steel type. But we never started the topic about size of the helmet.

Thanks to a great conversation with Travis Wilding and few of our customers we would like to start a small talk about what size of the helmet we should order. There are several views provided by fighters to this which we would like to present you.

REGION

Point, region and fighting style will impact the design outcome of helmet we want to order. It’s a good stepping stone in understanding the sport on the global scale. Comparing experience of several fighters from different countries – style of fighting in region we fight will be the MAIN point in choosing size of the helmet and form of padding.

Standard add to the circuit for the padding is 12cm.

Fighters which fight in regions with more aggressive style, heavier fighters and more polearms will choose even 16/17cm extra circuit sized helmets to add there foam, impaction gel, extra cotton padding or rugby padding.

WHAT CATEGORY I FIGHT

Point, category we fight in will give as a base to choose the size as well:

Duels, profights (sword/axe, shield) – +12cm

Duels longsword, polearms, profights (polearms), buhurts standard – +14cm

Heavy buhurts +14/16cm

HEAD ANATOMY

Several of our customers provided us some very custom shapes and sizes of helmets depending of the head anatomy and neck length.

Fighters which wider jaws mostly order helmets with bigger size than standard to avoid chin hits, and side jaw injuries (top regulated hood recommended)

Fighters with smaller head circuit choose helmets with standard padding but with longer doom

Fighters with round faces and short necks choose heavy padding size

Fighters with long necks choose helmets with medium padding size

HOW TO ORDER A HELMET

Now its a lesson for us to make wider research for what our customer need the helmet and where he fights to provide wider range of options. Thanks to this we will avoid:

To small helmets

To short helmets

To flat helmets (close to the face)

Helmets which move on the head

TYPES OF PADDING

We have several forms of helmet liners and extra options to avoid extra impact. We would like to list few of them:

Cotton fulled padding without regulation

Cotton fulled padding with top regulation

Foam with regulation

Impact foam

Impact pads

Gel

Rugby and military padds

Standard form of finish wont always be the best way (the form how the producer finish the helmet even after consultation with the customer). Every fighter have individual hallmarks which sometimes will cause of custom repadding of the helmet we recieved as battle ready.

Remember every ARMOR need to be CUSTOMIZES under our needs. Anatomy, how you fight, what weapon do you use and what is your role on the battlefield.

Hope to start a good conversation on this topic!
